Welcome to The Voltaire

Situated in the heart of the Poitou Charentes countryside, 60 km south of the Loire, is the small medieval town of Airvault. Here Marc and Jo Cottrell offer a warm relaxed welcome at ‘The Voltaire' Bed and Breakfast in their 19th Century mansion home.

The Voltaire, located in the centre of Airvault, has 3 large individually styled and furnished double and twin bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. The emphasis of ‘The Voltaire` is that you have an enjoyable and comfortable stay with us whether it is for 1 night, a couple of days, a week or more. The benefit from the ‘soft` air and comfort of The Voltaire has resulted in guests sleeping for longer than they expected! As a result of this, breakfast can be served as late as 11.30am.

There is plenty of communal space for you to relax in, including a sitting room and library with a selection of books and board games. Outside we have a freestanding pool (warmer months only), and of course many people feel that no trip to France is complete without a game of boules or petanque, so we have an area in the walled garden set aside and a set of boules available. Breakfast is served either in the dining room or, weather permitting, in the garden.

In this idyllic and unspoilt part of France we benefit from very high annual sunshine levels, second only to the Côte d’Azur, and the added beauty of being in the heart of the largest sunflower growing region in France.

Being in the centre of a rural town, most amenities are available within a short walk, including bakeries, butchers' shops, restaurants (the closest of which is next door) and bars, banks (with cash machines), a chemist and much more. There is a market every Saturday morning selling local produce and even a beautician for those who may want a little extra pampering.

Several leisure activities are available within the town, including an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and cycle routes. Stunning walks around the town provide an opportunity to appreciate the picturesque town and its architecture – some dating back to the 9th Century – while the nearby countryside, with the River Thouet running through it, allows a more tranquil opportunity to take in the wide variety of flora and fauna. We have a couple of adult bikes that you can borrow. Further afield there are plenty of other activities to occupy visitors of all ages – please see our “Out and About” section for more information.

For those not wanting to go out in the evening, we can provide evening meals on request. We can also arrange to put a picnic together for you if you wish.
